Republic of Congo
The Aka tribe “Pygmies” have no written language and therefore no Bible. The vast majority are still owned as slaves. They are often called the forest people and are known for their skill as hunters and gatherers.
The official language in Congo is French. However, tribal languages such as Lingala, Kikongo, and Kituba are more widely used among the people. Both French and Lingala will be used in our day to day ministry.
Though 33% of the population would claim to be catholic, only a small portion are actively practicing catholics.
Animism and spiritism are deeply engrained in the culture and history of Congo and are widely practiced. Practices such as fetishes and curses have been intermingled with many of the major religions.
